2012 NIAUSI AIA Seattle Fellowship

Fellowship Information and Applicant Qualifications

The joint NIAUSI/AIA Seattle Fellowship for 2012 offers residency in the Italian hill town of Civita di Bagnoregio for licensed architects who are members in good standing of the AIA Seattle Chapter. Applicants must have completed a minimum of seven years of work in their field. Board members of NIAUSI or the AIA and their families are not eligible.

In addition to the joint NIAUSI/AIA Fellowship, NIAUSI continues to offer its own NIAUSI Fellowships, as it has since 1985. Applicants for the joint NIAUSI/AIA Fellowship may also choose to apply to one or both of the NIAUSI Fellowships on the same application form.

An important purpose of these fellowships is to promote the public discussion of issues related to the built environment. To that end, the following requirements are required of the Fellow, as further described in the application:

- Prior to departure, meet with the NIAUSI Board and AIA Seattle to discuss the proposed project and attend an orientation session.

- Upon return, make an informal presentation to the NIAUSI Board and AIA Seattle, reporting on the experience and the project.

- Participate in at least one NIAUSI sponsored public presentation in Seattle and at least one AIA Seattle-sponsored public presentation and gallery exhibit in Seattle.

- Contribute digital images or other materials representative of the Fellow's work for permanent inclusion in NIAUSI and the AIA Seattle's archives.

- Fellows are strongly urged to study the Italian language prior to departure.

Program Location, Accommodation, and Funding

The NIAUSI/AIA Seattle Fellowship provides a modest stipend, along with lodging for one month in Civita, to be taken at a mutually agreeable time during calendar year 2012. The fellowship must be completed during the calendar year. No extensions will be granted.

Fellows will be responsible for their own financial support, including the cost of travel to and from Civita. Accommodations in Civita di Bagnoregio are provided in autonomous apartments made available to NIAUSI by the late Astra Zarina and her husband, Tony Costa Heywood. Each dwelling has a kitchen and bathroom and is suitable for one person, though it may be possible to accommodate spouses/partners by prior arrangement. Note that summers can be quite hot and the dwellings are not air conditioned. Professor Zarina founded, directed and taught both the University of Washington's Architecture in Rome Program from 1979 to 1999 and the Italian Hilltowns Program from 1975 to 2002. Tony Costa Heywood is an architect.

Fellows will have access to a comprehensive library of materials related to Civita and other Italian hill towns, as well as general material on architecture and urbanism.

Civita di Bagnoregio is located on a promontory, accessible only by a pedestrian bridge. The pedestrian bridge is at the edge of the town of Bagnoregio and may be reached by public bus or taxi from the town of Orvieto, the closest rail stop to Civita. While some limited services (restaurants, etc.) are available in Civita, grocery stores, post office, bank, public transportation, and other services are readily available in Bagnoregio. It should be noted that there are no handicap accessible facilities available in Civita.

All applicants will be granted a one-year membership in NIAUSI.
